Avocado Orchards

AvoOwner's orchards are designed according to strict protocols for contours and drainage systems to prevent soil erosion. Young trees are planted on ridges, which promotes drainage and reduces the risk of root rot. Avocado orchards typically consist of about 10-15 rows per orchard with about 200 to 880 avocado trees each, this is dependent on the planting space and block size. We currently have 30 orchards in Limpopo, and are in the process of establishing an additional 30 orchards in the Western Cape, during the next 5 years.

In the area that the farm is located, commercial cultivars in the orchards such as Fuerte and Pinkerton are for early bearing and others such as Hass, Maluma and Ryan bear fruit later in the year. They are specifically grown to ensure a greater supply when availability is limited.

2. Risk: Hail - No Prevention methods, the farming operations are covered by crop insurance.
3. Risk: Pest/Insects - We use an integrated pest/insects Management plan that includes; scouting schedules and methods, ensuring that all organic material in the orchards are cleaned, mulching and applying tested organic material that ensures soil health.
We are a certified Global GAP farm which means that we have policies, procedures, risk assessments and operating instructions to ensure a successful farming operation and the supply of good quality fruit to countries all over the world.

The avocado farming operation is situated in Soekmekaar Limpopo South Africa.

Traders can make a profit in two ways:
1. Buy young trees at a low entry price and sell later at a higher price when the trees are bigger and producing sufficient yield to make a profit.
2. Buy older trees that are producing good yield to make a profit from the sale of the produce.
When, for example, we harvest the Hass cultivar of Orchard 10 to 17 between June and December and the yield is a 100 ton of avocados, we will calculate the share as follows:
100 000 / 2000 avocado trees = 50kg per tree. If you own 23 of the Hass avocado trees, your trees will have yielded 1150kg. AvoOwner will harvest, grade, sort and send the consignment for packaging and sales to the local and international market. The revenue for the consignment will be divided by 2000 trees to determine the gross income.
The cost of the trees are deducted from the Gross Income
The Net Income is shared 65% to the trader and 35% to Fruittex as a management fee.
The primary expenses are; Farm Worker salaries, Fertilizer, Chemicals, Electricity, Diesel, Repairs, Maintenance and security.
The total expenses are divided by the total hectares and then again divided by the total trees to determine the cost per tree.
Fruittex takes 35% of the harvest net profit for management fees, commission etc.
When Fruittex resells the trees on the trading platform, we take a 7% trading fee for the sale of the trees, including legal and admin fees. .
